This past weekend saw not only a full return to action for much of Europe, but also the return of international rugby as both the Six Nations and Rugby Europe Championship played tests. As such there was no shortage of candidates for our weekly honor roll.
Starting in the Premier 15s, it was Canadian second rows Abby Duguid and McKinley Hunt who stood out most. Duguid was named Player of the Match in just her second start with Loughborough, while Hunt scored the game-winning try for Exeter. Unusually it came just three minutes into the match!
Over on the men’s side we saw another fine outing for Agustín Creevy with London Irish, and before him AJ MacGinty was in top form for Sale. Leicester gave us not one but two standouts as Julián Montoya scored twice for his new club while Tomás Lavanini was also a dominant figure for Tigers.
Our short list features who players who are in fact no longer eligible for Los Pumas, but remain products of Argentine rugby and thus qualify for consideration. Juan Ignacio Brex made his awaited test debut for Italy and while the Azzurri were outclassed by France, the former Pumas Sevens standout can stand tall with some excellent ball carrying in the midfield.
Picking the winner, however, came down to the result. Bautista Güemes, also a former Argentina Sevens rep, scored 15 points for Spain as they defeated Portugal to put a close on the postponed 2020 matches. He should prove an influential figure as the Leones push for a place in Rugby World Cup 2023.
