The Utah Warriors have rewarded Joseph Mano for his fine form with their Utah Selects development side, signing the 25-year-old to a senior Major League Rugby deal for the 2021 season. It’s the first professional contract for the fleet-footed winger.
Though born in Hawai’i, Mano grew up in American Samoa and represented the Talavalu Sevens side at the 2019 Olympic Qualifying tournament in Fiji. There he played alongside Warriors teammate James Vaifale and Seattle Seawolves center Joey Iosefa.
Mano is the first of seven development players on the senior training squad to earn an MLR contract. Along with Vaifale he joins an impressive outside backs group at Utah that also includes 2018 MLR try-scoring leader Tonata Lauti and a pair of US Eagles in Josh Whippy and new recruit Mike Te’o.
