The RFU Championship have confirmed that the heavily-delayed 2020-2021 season will now go ahead. A schedule for the maligned English second division has been approved that will see the 11 participating teams playing 10 games each.
It’s welcome news for players left in limbo, and comes following loan assurances from the UK government. One Championship team, however, has opted out with London Scottish indicating they are not in a financial position to play games without fans. They will return in the 2021-2022 season.
Most notable is the inclusion of a two-leg playoff series to determine promotion to the English Premiership. It comes in the wake of widespread rumors in the British media that the Premiership was preparing to operate with 13 teams next season and closing off promotion from the Championship.
Americas players who stand to benefit from the announcement include Saracens trio Kapeli Pifeleti, Will Hooley, and Juan Pablo Socino. Nicolás de Battista remains on the Cornish Pirates roster online but the status of Javier Rojas is uncertain.
