Rugby ATL have confirmed the signing of versatile South African back Robbie Petzer. While the length of the contract has not been publicly disclosed, it’s believed to be a long-term agreement that will tie him to Atlanta through the 2023 Major League Rugby season.
The move completes a long and remarkable off-season for the 24-year-old. When the Colorado Raptors withdrew from MLR he signed for Tokyo Gas, only to see the deal fall through due to the pandemic. He then signed for Dallas and again was left in the cold when the Jackals dropped out last month.
Petzer should reprise his Raptors role as an inside center for ATL, where his mix of running and footballing skills add options to the attack. It will allow Pumas import Bautista Ezcurra to shift to outside center with returning Jeremy Misailegalu able to cover both center and wing.
Though he is not qualified for the Eagles on residency, Petzer will notably be considered a domestic player for the 2021 season due to the Dallas dispersal agreement. He is the third Jackals player whose destination has been publicly revealed following Conrado Roura and Bronson Teles.
