Biarritz Olympique have set their sights on Joshua Furno to fill the gap left by Evan Olmstead’s injury. The Italian international has reportedly arrived in France for testing and is set to sign on as a medical joker for at least the next three months while Olmstead is recovering.
Furno had already committed to the San Diego Legion for the 2021 MLR campaign and it’s not clear yet if that obligation would be kept upon Olmstead’s return. With the 2021 MLR season scheduled to begin in late March and run through August, Furno could miss the first half of the season.
EDIT: Biarritz have confirmed that Furno has signed with the club until the end of the Pro D2 season. With the club likely to be included in the knock-out phases, it appears unlikely that Furno will remain contracted with San Diego for 2021.
San Diego still has Ben Mitchell and Siaosi Mahoni as a likely first choice pairing, while back rows Tevita Tameilau and Keni Nasoqeqe can also cover lock. They could also look to re-sign versatile Jasa Veremalua, currently out of contract, or look to Dallas signing Theo McFarland who is now a free agent.
