The Houston SaberCats have confirmed the signatures of Van Stewart, Zachary Short, and Max Tacket for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. All three are US-eligible and part of the team in 2020.
Stewart is the most recent arrival. The 23-year-old lock or blindside flanker debuted in the 4th week of the 2020 campaign and made two replacement appearances before the season was suspended. During the break he returned to Australia and was a regular starter with Manly in the Shute Shield.
Also 23, Short initially signed as cover at both halfback positions but will focus on scrumhalf in 2021. California-born but a product of New Zealand rugby, he was named to three match day rosters but made just a single as a replacement for captain De Wet Roos.
Tacket is the most experienced of the three but the 29-year-old did not play in the five weeks that were completed in 2020. During his first season in 2019 the strong-running center was a regular contributor with 10 games and 6 starts. He will have heavy competition for game time this coming season with the likes of Moa Maliepo, Thomas Morani, and Taylor Howden also in the midfield mix.
