Rugby community mourns death of Shawn Riley

NOLA Gold have confirmed the death of winger Shawn Riley. The 30-year-old Wooster, Ohio, native passed away on Tuesday evening after experiencing severe complications following heart surgery.

Riley joined the Gold in 2019, having previously played professionally for the Ohio Aviators in the 2016 PRO season. He made just two appearances in 2019 but impressed during the 2020 preseason and played two more games including a start in the win over Colorado before the campaign was suspended.

The news comes as a shock to the rugby community with Riley playing with the Aviators in their return at the World Tens Series event in Bermuda just three months ago. He was a product of Notre Dame College, Southern Pines RFC, and the Tiger Rugby academy, and represented both the USA South Panthers in XV-a-side rugby and the USA Hawks in sevens.
