José Ramón Ayarza is on his way back home from France. The Chilean loose head prop is joining Selknam for the 2021 Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) season. He is doing so from French club Anglet.
Ayarza is Chile’s leading loose head prop. The 27-year-old has 13 test caps to his name. The product of Old Boys is joining Selknam from the Fédérale 1. The tournament was suspended due to the global pandemic.
Ayerza has vast additional playing experience outside of Chile. He has played in both the Top 14 and Pro D2 for Bayonne as well as for both Montauban and Carcassonne in the Pro D2, and for ROC La Voulte in the Fédérale 1. He also has amateur experience in New Zealand playing for Mount Maunganui and Sumner.
If rugby operated on a global season then Ayarza would have many more than 13 test caps. He made his test debut against Spain in 2013. He helped Los Cóndores to their inaugural win in the Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) in 2016. Five years later he is back to play professional rugby in his homeland.
