Seawolves re-sign scrumhalf star JP Smith

JP Smith is returning for a third season with the Seattle Seawolves. The 26-year-old scrumhalf follows fellow South African Riekert Hattingh in signing on for the 2021 Major League Rugby campaign. Both players were also part of the Ohio Aviators squad at the World Tens Series event in Bermuda.

After rotating between scrumhalf and flyhalf during the title-winning 2019 season to accommodate Phil Mack and Ben Cima, Smith made the No9 shirt his own in 2020. His aggressive running style and heavy left boot have made him one of the more influential halfbacks in MLR.

Where Hattingh is already US-qualified on residency, Smith could follow suit with a brief three-year residency period coming in December 2021. Despite playing for South Africa at u20 level he remains untied to his home country and could opt to pursue Eagles honors in the future.
