Peñarol have signed Facundo Gattas. In doing so the Uruguayan international will play in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby this year. Gattas joins Peñarol from Buenos Aires’ Hindú Club.
The 25-year-old Gattas has 33 caps for Uruguay. He made his test debut in 2016 against Canada in the Americas Rugby Championship. He was a regular member of the test roster during the RWC 2015-2019 cycle. He made the roster for RWC 2019 itself and played in Los Teros’ matches against Fiji in Kamaishi and Georgia in Kumagaya.
In 2020 he played in both test matches against Spain. In the first he started at hooker while in the second he came off the bench to play at loose head prop. It is hooker where he will likely be of most use to Peñarol this year. Two of the three hookers on the 2020 Peñarol roster were not Uruguayan and neither will return this year. Gattas and Guillermo Pujadas give Pablo Bouza two solid players.
Peñarol is a homecoming for Gattas. He is a native of Montevideo. He learned his rugby playing in the Uruguayan capital.
