San Diego grabs top Canadian prospect Michael Smith

The San Diego Legion have snapped up one of Canada’s top loose forward prospects for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. Michael Smith has signed on from the UBC Thunderbirds after a decorated university career and graduation through the national age-grade ranks.

Smith, 22, helped the Thunderbirds capture back-to-back Canadian University university titles and captained the side to the 2019 final. He was named a first team University All-Star in 2018. Earlier that year he was vice-captain of Canada’s entry at the World Rugby u20 Trophy in Romania.

A well-rounded player who is comfortable across the back row, Smith projects as an openside flanker at the professional level and will provide cover for Psalm Wooching and Chris Robshaw at San Diego. He joins fellow Canadians Travis Larsen and Josh Thiel at the club. Smith and Thiel were part of Canada’s recent high performance training camp in Langford.
