Selknam sign Santiago Portillo from Ceibos

Selknam have signed Santiago Portillo. The Chilean Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) franchise have secured the services of the Argentine player from Los Ceibos. With Portillo joining Selknam presently have four Argentine players. Three members of the 2020 roster re-signed.

Selknam proved to be competitive in the 2020 SLAR season. The team opened with an upset away victory over Peñarol. It was followed up with a home defeat against Los Ceibos in Santiago. Portillo featured in Los Ceibos debut, a home match against the Olímpia Lions.

Portillo’s move to Selknam marks the eighth transfer of a Ceibos player from one SLAR team to another. First, Los Cafeteros Pro drafted Facundo Ferrario and Gonzalo García. Second, the Olímpia Lions drafted Lucas Favre, Ignacio Inchauspe, Carlos Repetto, and Lucas Santa Cruz. Third, Leopoldo Herrera signed for the Olímpia Lions. Others are expected to follow.

Portillo’s regular position is N8. Due to his skill-set and size he has played a lot for the Argentina XV in the second-row. The 25-year-old is a product of Los Tarcos in Tucumán.

He played for Los Jaguares XV in 2019. He was a part of the undefeated team that competed in South Africa’s Currie Cup First Division.
