The Olímpia Lions have signed not one, but two Ceibos scrum-halves for the 2021 season. Joaquín Pellandini and Ignacio Inchauspse join the Paraguayan team from Argentina to compete in the 2021 Super Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR).
The pair were two of the three scrum-halves on Los Ceibos’ 2020 roster. The third was Gonzalo García. Like Inchauspe and Pellandini, García will play the 2021 SLAR season for another team. García was drafted by Colombian side Los Cafeteros Pro.
Inchauspe was a replacement for García in Los Ceibos two SLAR matches in 2020. He came off the bench in round one against the Olímpia Lions in Córdoba and in round two against Selknam in Santiago. He was signed to play for Ceibos without prior experience for the Argentina XV.
Pellandini started in the 2019 u20’s away win over South Africa. He played inside Nicolás Roger, a player drafted alongside García by Los Cafeteros Pro. Pellandini started for the Argentina XV in the South American 4 Nations title winning victory over the Uruguay XV.
There were three scrum-halves on the 2020 Olímpia Lions roster. Two of them will not be a part of the 2021 SLAR season. Paraguay’s Nicolás Cabral may return, and debut, for the Lions in 2021.
The loss of all scrum-halves to rival SLAR teams comes with questions over Argentina’s SLAR team. Los Ceibos are reportedly to be replaced by Los Jaguares XV. The UAR contracted test players of Gonzalo Bertranou and Felipe Ezcurra are likely to be the scrum-halves.
