Final Olympic Qualifier set for June in Monaco

World Rugby have confirmed that the final Olympic qualifier tournament will be held in Monaco on June 19 and 20. The Repechage event will determine the final two spots for the women’s bracket and one remaining spot in the men’s bracket.

Stade Louis II will act as the venue once again having also served as host for the 2016 Olympic Repechage tournaments. There will be 12 teams competing in each of the men’s and women’s competitions with participants determined from previous regional qualifiers.

The women’s competition will feature Argentina, Colombia, France, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Russia, Samoa, and Tunisia. The men’s tournament will involve Brazil, Chile, China, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Jamaica, Mexico, Samoa, Tonga, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

Also confirmed is a series of ‘preparation events’ co-funded by World Rugby and the International Olympic Committee. The first will take place in Madrid, Spain, on 20-21 and 27-28 February. Further tournaments will be confirmed at a future date.

Meanwhile World Rugby has announced further postponements of World Sevens Series events. Singapore and Hong Kong, originally scheduled for April, will now take place on October 29-30 and November 5-7 respectively. France will host two Women’s Series events in Marcoussis on successive weekends starting on May 15. The Challenger Series will take place in late 2021.
