Carrasco Polo defeat Old Christians to be 2020 Uruguayan Champions

Carrasco Polo are the 2020 Uruguay de Clubes champions. The club won by defeating 2019 champions Old Christians 25-18 in the final.

The win will be celebrated not only by Carrasco Polo players and supporters. It will also be important in Colombia. Props Carlos Ángulo and Daniel Gutiérrez started the final as did Argentine scrum half Manuel Nogués. All three played well with the Colombians having a strong day in the scrum and the scrum half from Club Atlético del Rosario organizing play very well.

An additional player of note was captain Santiago Hernández. The No8 had a busy match. In addition the 40-times capped Nicolás Freitas had a strong match; his defense was a notable difference between the sides.

The title extends Carrasco Polo’s record as Uruguay’s greatest club of all-time. Carrasco Polo has 28 national titles. Old Christians is next best with 20.

Old Christians went into the 2020 campaign as the defending champions. Not only did the club win in 2019, it was also Uruguayan champions in 2015, 2016, and 2017. In their only ever title, Paysandú Trébol are the 2018 champions.

Carrasco Polo’s wait is long by their standards. The club’s previous Uruguay de Clubes title was in 2014. Prior to that Carrasco Polo won 22 out of the 24 years form 1990-2012. The club won every year from 1990-2006. Old Christians were 2007 champions and Old Boys won in 2010.

By way of comparison, Old Christians dominated from the mid 1970s to the end of the 1980s. This saw Old Christians winning national titles in 1976-1980, 1982, and 1984-1989. Carrasco Polo won in 1981 and 1983.
