The Argentine player exodus continues. Gloucester have signed Santiago Carreras from Los Jaguares. The English Premiership club will be Carreras’ first foreign experience. He was a Super Rugby rookie in 2019 and went on to play in RWC 2019. He joins Gloucester with immediate effect. He contract is for the remainder of the 2020-2021 season.
Carreras began RWC 2019 as a replacement against France. He was then preferred to Ramiro Moyano against Tonga, England, and the USA. He started all three matches on the wing. Prior to RWC 2019 he had two appearances from the bench.
In 2020 Carreras became Los Jaguares’ leading fullback. Gonzalo Quesada moved Emiliano Boffelli to the left wing and utilized Carreras in his natural position. This was replicated by Mario Ledesma in the recent Tri Nations. Carreras started at fullback in the win over New Zealand and both drawn matches against Australia.
Carreras moves to Gloucester with eight test caps to his name. He is expected to play many more times for Argentina. Gloucester is also the home of Matías Alemanno. He was also a regular in the Tri Nations and like Carreras is from Córdoba.
In total seventeen players who have departed Jaguares in the COVID-19 influenced exodus. Carerras’ departure follows the recent moves of Bautista Delguy to Bordeaux, Lucas Paulos to Brive and the trio of Tomás Lezana, Santiago Medrano, Domingo Miotti to the Western Force. More players are rumored to be departing Los Jaguares.
