San Diego flyhalf Luke Burton moves to LA

Friday’s signing announcement from the LA Giltinis is confirmation of Luke Burton’s move from the San Diego Legion. The 26-year-old flyhalf is the latest Australian to join the expansion side, with further backline additions from the ‘land down under’ expected to follow.

Burton made a significant impression in his first season of Major League Rugby. He started all five games for the undefeated Legion in the shortened 2020 campaign, scoring 37 points. His accurate distribution and tactical kicking range kept San Diego on the front foot.

The addition both strengthens LA and weakens their Californian rivals. San Diego are yet to announce a replacement for Burton with 36-year-old captain Joe Pietersen currently favorite to move back to the No10 position following the arrival of fellow South African fullback Cecil Afrika.
