UAR reverse decision: Matera, Petti and Socino free to play

The UAR has reversed their decision. Pablo Matera, Guido Petti, and Santiago Socino are now free to play vs Australia. The trio were suspended on Monday with Matera also revoked of the captaincy. In a 180 degree turn, the suspensions have all been lifted. Alejo Miranda reports in La Nacion that they could now all feature in Sydney.

Miranda notes that the UAR responded to criticism to overturn the suspensions. The union did so for three reasons. First, non-traveling injured Pumas supported the players. Second, former Pumas supported the players. Third, a good number of clubs supported the players. The threat of Argentina boycotting the game was minor.

Miranda also pointed out that Matera’s involvement in the match is unconfirmed. Mario Ledesma will name his team at 1am (Argentina time) on Thursday.

The match will be Argentina’s fourth of the Tri Nations. An historic win over New Zealand in Sydney was followed by a draw against Australia and then a shutout defeat to the All Blacks in Newcastle. The team returns to Sydney for Saturday’s game against the Wallabies.
