ARN Player of the Week – Facundo Cordero

ARN Player of the week is a weekly exclusive on Americas Rugby News. It recognizes the top performers from the Americas over the past week.

How spirits can change in the span of a week. After the Pumas triumph over the All Blacks and a palatable draw against the Wallabies, one might have hoped for more glory from the test arena. Alas best wishes are left with disaster on and off the pitch, with the Tupis no saving grace in Portugal either.

There was one international success worth recognizing as Brazil’s Women conquered the Sudamérica Sevens once again. We tip our caps to Beatriz Mühlbauer. ‘Futuro’ announced her retirement at the age of 34 with well over a decade of excellence behind her including a Bronze Medal at the 2015 Pan-Am Games.

On the club front there were two women in particular who merited close consideration. Kate Zackary is again an honorary mention after a Player of the Game effort for Exeter, with Courtney Holtkamp garnering similar applause for Loughborough. Meanwhile Santiago Arata shone for Castres with an excellent all-around effort.

Our selection as Player of the Week is an Argentine in England. While Santiago was struggling against New Zealand, Facundo Cordero conjured his best brotherly impression for Exeter Chiefs as they crushed Bath at Sandy Park. Cordero let the Premiership in defenders beaten with eight and racked up nearly a hundred meters with ball in hand. He even managed to survive a crunching hit from Beno Obano at the end of one scything run.
