Ruben de Haas scores first Super Rugby try against Griquas

It was a long wait for his first senior cap for the Cheetahs, and now Ruben de Haas has his first try. The 22-year-old USA scrumhalf pounced on a loose ball in-goal to claim the memorable score late in the game against Griquas on Saturday during the final round of the Super Rugby Unlocked season.

After seeing his intended debut washed out by COVID-19, de Haas finally took the field against the Sharks two weeks ago. He would close the shortened campaign with three appearances as a replacement, enjoying a 20-minute run against the Stormers last weekend.

Where the Eagles World Cup select goes next remains to be seen. The Cheetahs are in limbo following their axing from the Guinness Pro Championship by the South African Rugby Union and are said to be considering legal action with no Super Rugby to turn to in 2021. If no agreement is found they could be left with the Currie Cup as their only domestic option next year.

With his current contract running through October 2021 it looks unlikely that de Haas would be available to a Major League Rugby side unless a loan was agreed with the Cheetahs. Johan Momsen, Stefan Willemse, and Ryan Nell each played on loan with Rugby ATL during the 2020 MLR campaign before suiting up in the Unlocked season.
