Liam Steel will continue with the New England Free Jacks for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. It’s the second of a two-year deal signed in 2019, arriving on the back of two campaigns with the Bay of Plenty Steamers in New Zealand’s Mitre 10 Cup.
The 29-year-old enjoyed a positive start to his MLR career. Playing at outside center, Steel scored in the season-opener against Rugby United New York while also impressing with his strength in defense. He would add one more try in three starts for the Free Jacks, missing two games due to injury.
New England now have the bulk of their backs division secured for next season. Newcomers Aleki Morris-Lome and Harry Barlow join Steel as specialist centers, with Scottish international Dougie Fife an option at wing or fullback. Returnees Poasa Waqanibau, Mitch Wilson, and Beaudein Waaka are each capable of covering multiple positions across the backline.
