Chile cap impressive SA 4 Nations with win over Brazil

Chile impressed today, defeating Brazil 26-13. The result means that the Chile XV finish the South American 4 Nations with a 2-1 record. It marks mission accomplished for Los Cóndores. The Brazil XV return home winless.

The Chile XV were on top for the majority of the contest. It was not the case early on, however. Instead, the Brazil XV started with a bang. N8 André Arruda blastered through from an attacking lineout to score. The converted try gave Os Tupis a 7-0 lead after 6 minutes.

A Chilean error had contributed to Brazil’s attacking position; this fired-up Chile. Captain Martín Sigren barged over in the 15th minute. It was a comparable score to his try from Wednesday in the win over the Uruguay XV.

Santiago Videla landed the conversion. Five minutes later he kicked a second goal, this time a penalty. It saw the Chile XV opening the second quarter of play with a 10-7 advantage.

The wind took center-stage for the remainder of the half. Handling errors creeped in from both sides. There was further scoring by both teams as they traded penalties.

Brazil leveled the scores in the 44th minute. Josh Reeves landed a penalty from in front. It would be the only points of the second half for Os Tupis. The Chileans responded with a magical try from José Ignacio Larenas. Rodrigo Fernández broke a Devon Muller tackle and darted his way up field. He kicked ahead with the bounce favoring Videla’s shin. Larenas had the pace to get to the ball first.

Videla landed the conversion and added a penalty with fifteen minutes remaining. The penalty meant that the Chile XV had turned down a possible try and thus would not be going for the bonus point win. Referee Francisco González had decided against a penalty try despite Chile driving Brazil’s scrum back from the five meter line.

The final whistle saw differing outcomes. Brazil were very disappointed and the Chileans were ecstatic. It was a very different contest to matches between the sides from the RWC 2015-2019 cycle. Chile’s investments have evidently brought results. There is reason to believe that the RWC 2023 qualifiers will be wide-open.
