DTH van der Merwe joins Miami Sun for World Tens

Canadian international star DTH van der Merwe headlines the Miami Sun entry for the upcoming World Tens Series. The 34-year-old suits up for the first time since departing Glasgow Warriors earlier this year. He is one of three inclusions set to join the LA Giltinis for their inaugural Major League Rugby campaign along with Eagles cap Nick Boyer and former Austin lock Luca Tani.

There are 13 players in all with MLR experience. Several have featured with Rugby United New York, including front rowers Anthony Parry and Mike Brown, back row Matt Hughston, and versatile players Marcus Satavu, Troy Lockyear, and Mark O’Keeffe.

Namibian international center joins having signed for Peñarol of the South American Súper Liga earlier this year. Tiger Rugby specimens Tyrie Allen and Matthew Coore accompany Satavu and former NOLA winger Joey Sok. Arriving from London Irish is fullback James Stokes.

Former Bath and Rotherham flanker Russell Earnshaw will coach the side. He was a long-time England Sevens player before spending six years as an assistant coach on the World Sevens Series. Nottingham backs coach David Ross will act as Earnshaw’s assistant.

The inaugural event, hosted by Bermuda, takes place over three weekends starting on Saturday. Broadcast details for North America are set to be confirmed on Wednesday.
