Favaro scores 20 as Uruguay down Brazil in SA 4 Nations

Federico Favaro scored a match-winning 20 points for Uruguay this evening. His 20 point haul was a personal best, overtaking the 19 points he scored against Paraguay in his second cap in 2014. Uruguay were 25-18 winners over Paraguay in game two of the South American 4 Nations in Montevideo.

As was the case in the Chile XV vs Argentina XV match, the underdogs started the strongest. Veteran Brazilian center Moisés Duque slotted two early drop goals. The 6-0 advantage grew. In the 13th minute Duque slotted his first of two penalties to put Os Tupis into an early 9-0 lead.

Uruguay would not trouble the scorers in the opening quarter. The points came as the second quarter began. Favaro slotted the first of six penalties of the evening. He would land two more in the opening half, compared to one more from Duque. With it Brazil held a 12-9 half-time advantage.

Favaro’s boot took centerstage in the second half. He slotted penalties in the 42nd, 54th, and 58th minutes to give Uruguay an 18-12 lead. Brazil’s response came in the 61st minute. It came in the form of a try to Yan Rosetti.

Rosetti’s try was unconverted, this meant that Uruguay retained the lead. The home side would not be caught. They would score a try of their own with Guillermo Pujadas scoring a push-over try from a rolling maul. Favaro converted to put Uruguay eight points ahead and round off his 20-point-haul.

Both the Uruguay XV and Brazil XV will play again on Wednesday. The Uruguay XV will be up against the Chile XV, while the Brazil XV face the Argentina XV.
