2020 South American 4 Nations Preview: Chile XV

The 2020 South American 4 Nations will take place this month in Montevideo. The COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) and other annual components of the calendar.

The South American 4 Nations means that Chile will get at least there matches this year. The tournament is vital for Los Cóndores; a team keen on qualifying for RWC 2023. In short, the pathway to France 2023 begins at the Estadio Charrúa.

Head Coach: Los Cóndores are coached by Pablo Lemoine. The Uruguayan played in multiple Rugby World Cups and in professional leagues. Since his retirement he has coached both Uruguay and Chile at the senior level.

CAPTAIN: Los Cóndores are led by the highly reliable Ignacio Silva. He can slot in anywhere in the back-row. His longevity has seen him playing both Sevens and seniors for Los Cóndores. He has 33 test caps to his name.

STAR PLAYER: There are a host of names that could impress. The one that is worth underlining the most may well be Anton Petrowitsch. The flanker has previously been named on ARN Dream Team’s. He has experience playing abroad, yet is still a young man. He will turn 26 during the tournament itself. Watch out for his ball-carrying and line-out work.

ONE TO WATCH: Austin Gilgronis scrum-half Marcelo Torrealba is on the roster. He is the one foreign-based player involved. He fit in well in Major League Rugby (MLR) and will be a go-to-man for Los Cóndores. He previously featured for Chile against the Maori All Blacks.

OUTLOOK: Chile’s first professional rugby team left a lasting impression seven months ago. Selknam were 15-13 winners over Peñarol in the inaugural Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) fixture. The star performer on that day was Santiago Videla who kicked all of Selknam’s points. Selknam were also competitive against Los Ceibos in the team’s only other match before the season was suspended. The performances and Cóndores player roster suggest that Chile will be stronger in 2020 than in the RWC 2015-2019 cycle. A win over Brazil is within Los Cóndores’ grasp.
