The Utah Warriors have unveiled plans to construct a new stadium in time for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. When completed it would be the third purpose-built rugby facility in the USA following Infinity Park in Glendale and Houston’s new AVEVA Stadium.
It’s an unexpected announcement given the Warriors currently occupy Zions Bank Stadium, itself a new construction that opened in 2018. That field and adjoining training facility is owned by Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer and is primarily designed for soccer.
The new project will have a capacity double that of Zions Bank Stadium at 10,000. Though primarily a home for rugby, it will also be used as a multi-sport venue and to host community and entertainment events. According to the media release the Warriors ownership group intends to being more professional sports teams to the area.
While renderings of the proposed stadium are available on Utah’s website, a site for the construction is yet to be identified. The team has partnered with local construction firm Mortenson to design and build the facility. Included in an extensive sports portfolio are Allianz Field in St. Paul, Chase Center in San Francisco, and Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
