Sebastián Piñeyrúa has been re-elected as Sudamérica Rugby President. The Uruguayan will thereby remain in charge of South America’s governing body for four further years. His new term will run from 2020-2024.
Piñeyrúa will be joined by fellow Uruguayan Marcello Calandra as Vice President. Additional representation comes directly from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Paraguay. The reserve members include four further countries: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Peru and Venezuela.
In his first term in office, Piñeyrua worked with unions to improve the game throughout the region. Among the developments was the creation of the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay all had their first taste of professional rugby in SLAR. Colombia is set to join in 2021.
