Leicester Tigers add Joaquín Díaz Bonilla from Jaguares

The Leicester Tigers have added Joaquín Díaz Bonilla from Los Jaguares. The club has confirmed the signing of the fly half from Argentina. Díaz Bonilla will join the Leicester Tigers for the 2020-2021 English Premiership season.

He follows the signing of center Matías Moroni. Both Moroni and Díaz Bonilla will play for the Tigers as of December. Both men are presently involved in Rugby Championship preparations with Los Pumas.

The Leicester Tigers are presently home to two other Argentine players: loose head Facundo Gigena and second-rower Tomás Lavanini. They are also both in Argentina’s plans for the Rugby Championship.

Díaz Bonilla has been capped four times by Argentina. He started against South Africa in 2019, but missed out on a place on the roster for RWC 2019. He was also the starting no 10 for Los Jaguares against the Crusaders in the 2019 Super Rugby Final.

The 31-year-old comes from the world famous Hindú club. The club, from Don Torcuato in northern Buenos Aires, has produced countless Pumas, one of them being Tomás Lavanini.

Leicester will be Díaz Bonilla’s second European experience. He previously played in France for Racing 92. He did so as a medical joker early last season due to RWC 2019.

Díaz Bonilla’s departure continues the ongoing player exodus from Argentina. Other players are rumored to be departing. They include Julián Montoya also to the Leicester Tigers; Emiliano Boffelli to Racing 92; and Javier Ortega Desio to Toulouse.
