Talks underway for Spain to tour Uruguay in November

Talks are underway for Spain to tour Uruguay in November. Negotiations between the Uruguayan and Spanish rugby unions are pointing towards a two test match series in Montevideo this coming November.

Los Teros would have home advantage against Los Leones. The series would follow the 2020 South American Championship. The confirmed tournament will be played in Montevideo in October. Uruguay will have home advantage against the Argentina XV, Brazil and Chile.

The to be confirmed program would mean that Uruguay play five matches, four of which are to be capped and would thereby count towards world rankings. All matches would also be played at the home of Uruguayan rugby, the Estadio Charrúa.

Rugby resumed in Uruguay before any other country in the Americas. The Uruguay de Clubes has seen there rounds of play and round four will take place this coming weekend. An agreement between the governing body and the clubs has seen Uruguay’s professional players involved. This has given SLAR and MLR players much needed game time.

Spain have a strong relationship with Uruguay and South American unions in general. In 2019 Spain defeated Uruguay in Montevideo. The match was part of a three match tour. In the first match Los Leones were pushed hard by a gallant Brazil in São Paulo. Spain were also successful against Chile.
