Official: South American Championship Set for October

It is official: the South American Championship is set for October. The competition will exclusively take place in Montevideo. It is to be a Four Nations tournament, in effect a 2020 version of Americas Rugby Championship without North Americans Canada and the USA.

The Argentina XV will join the test sides from Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. The teams will take-on each other  once. Match dates are confirmed for Saturday, October 17; Wednesday October 21; and Sunday, October 24. The schedule will be released in a matter of days.

Missing are Colombia and Paraguay. Both opted out of competing in the competition due to the situation in their respective countries. As such 2020 will not have a Sudamérica Rugby 6 Naciones A tournament. Instead the 2020 South American Championship is to be the Sudamericano 4 Naciones.

The Estadio Charrúa will host every match. Not only is it a highly suitable venue, but it is located Montevideo, Uruguay, Latin America’s leads when it comes to sanitation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rugby resumed in Uruguay last month. Thus far there have been three rounds of the 2020 Uruguayo de Clubes. The competition has given Uruguay’s professionals an opportunity to return to their clubs.

Teams in the South American Championship are to be assigned a medical team. They will be in direct contact with URU staff at all times.

All players and staff will be tested upon arrival in Montevideo. The Uruguayan government will assist in the process.
