Japan are prepared to host the troubled Summer Olympic Games regardless of any complication imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, says the country’s Olympic Minister. Seiko Hashimoto spoke at a media conference on Tuesday to reassure the public that the Games would go on in 2021.
“Everyone involved is working together to prepare and the athletes are also making considerable efforts towards next year. We have to hold the Games at any cost. I want to concentrate all our efforts on measures against the coronavirus.”
Originally scheduled to begin in late July of this year, the Games were postponed by one year in March. Questions about how to tackle issues such as travel restrictions, mandatory isolation, and whether or not media and/or public attendance will be allowed are among those that will need to be addressed in the coming months.
The Rugby Sevens is considered a high profile event at the Olympics. It will take place between July 25-31, 2021. Participating teams will have significantly reduced preparation in comparison to 2016 with four events already cancelled on the 2020-21 World Series and three teams still to qualify.
