Tony Lamborn to captain Southland in Mitre 10 Cup

USA international Tony Lamborn will captain Southland in the 2020 Mitre 10 Cup. They will compete in the Championship division. The 29-year-old loose forward returns to the Stags after a year away due to Rugby World Cup 2019 commitments. He also led the team in 2018.

Originally from Timaru on the east coast of New Zealand’s south island, Lamborn spent five seasons with the Hawke’s Bay Magpies before making the move south to Invercargill. He most recently lined up with the Blues in Super Rugby Aotearoa, playing five games including one start.

Lamborn isn’t the only player with American connections on the Stags roster for 2020. Rugby ATL fullback Rory van Vugt has been named in the squad. The 23-year-old started three games in the 2020 Major League Rugby season. This is van Vugt’s third Mitre 10 Cup campaign with Southland.
