Pele Cowley to stay on with Austin

Pele Cowley will be returning to Austin for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The Manu Samoa scrumhalf was one of three internationals who arrived just one game before the campaign was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

His MLR debut was a memorable one. Cowley played all 80 minutes to help steer the AG’s to victory over the SaberCats in Houston. In doing so they recorded their first league win since 2018 and took home the Texas Cup.

The 27-year-old is one of three scrumhalves in MLR who have represented Samoa. Utah captain Dwayne Polataivao joined Cowley at Rugby World Cup 2019, with Old Glory’s Danny Tusitala missing out despite playing well for Auckland.

Austin will have two sets of international halfbacks for the 2021 season. Chile scrumhalf Marcelo Torrealba and USA flyhalf Will Magie have already re-signed, with Tonga’s Kurt Morath’s return set to be confirmed in the coming days.
