Santiago Montagner departs Argentina for Mont de Marsan

The Argentine player exodus continues; Santiago Montagner will depart Argentina for Mont de Marsan. The 25-year-old PladAR project says goodbye to Los Ceibos to play in the Pro D2. El ultimo que apague la luz.

Montagner was a fringe player for a number of years. The N8 from Alumni trained with Los Jaguares, but was unable to break into the side for Super Rugby matches. He signed for Los Ceibos for the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) where he started against the Olímpia Lions and Selknam.

A natural N8, Montagner has al all-round strong game. He has a high work-rate around the field and carries well from the base of the scrum. He is also a reliable lineout option. This has seen him playing second-row at times for the Argentina XV and Jaguares XV.

Mario Ledesma’s decision to convert Javier Ortega Desio from flanker to N8 partly explains why Montagner has lacked opportunities for Jaguares and Argentina. His move to France comes as a medical joker.
