San Diego confirm Josh Thiel for second season

The San Diego Legion have confirmed a return for Josh Thiel for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. Initially unveiled by the club in December, the 23-year-old Canadian international returns for the second year of his contract after joining from the Pacific Pride.

Thiel’s arrival was delayed due to visa complications but he made two team sheets before the season was abruptly suspended. His only appearance came as a second-half replacement for Ma’a Nonu in the Week 4 road fixture against the NOLA Gold.

The ability to cover flyhalf, center, and fullback makes Thiel a valuable member of San Diego’s backs division. To date he is just the second confirmed returnee in that department following the re-signing of Nate Augspurger. Among others certain to follow is fellow USA international Ryan Matyas.
