Nick Civetta has turned down a contract extension with Pro D2 club Vannes in favor of a unique educational opportunity at Oxford University. The US Eagles lock will take up a two-year Masters Degree program in Renewable Energy Systems. His decision was first reported by Ouest France in late May, and Civetta discussed the move recently with Warren Mullis of the American Rugby Podcast.
The chance to win a prestigious ‘blue’ for Oxford in the Varsity Match awaits, but it will be delayed as the annual December fixture against Cambridge has been postponed to an early 2021 date still to be determined. Until then Civetta hopes to connect with a local club side while also training with the university outfit.
Civetta also notably confirmed his intention to join Major League Rugby upon completion of his degree. That could come as early as the 2022 season, with his home team of Rugby United New York a possible destination. The 30-year-old also says he will continue to play for the Eagles with the aim of earning selection to his second World Cup in 2023.
A remarkable recovery from a serious ankle injury saw Civetta starting three games for the USA at RWC 2019. Eagles teammate Eric Fry was also at Vannes but has since left the French club with a move to MLR for the 2021 season still potentially on the cards.
