Beauchamp and Freyre return for SaberCats in 2021

Luke Beauchamp and Matías Freyre will play for the Houston SaberCats in the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The club confirmed the return of the duo today on social media. It’s not immediately clear if this is an extension or continuation of their existing contracts.

Now entering his third MLR season, Beauchamp has proved a highly valuable addition since arriving from Australia in late 2018. The 27-year-old flanker has appeared in all 21 games for Houston in that time, starting 19 and captaining the side once.

Freyre, who turns 26 in a week’s time, is US-born but raised in Argentina whom he represented on the World Sevens Series. Injury cost him one game in his first season but he started the other four, showing his versatility by starting at both outside center and fullback.

The SaberCats have now confirmed seven returning players including five from the inaugural 2018 campaign. Front row pair Nik Hildebrand and Tiaan Erasmus join former Utah flyhalf Robbie Povey as incoming, with second row Victor Comptat and midfielder Tiaan Loots among the outgoing.
