The Campeonato Uruguayo will start on August 15, the URU has confirmed. The return of rugby in Uruguay will see not only the premier division but also lower levels and age-grade rugby all getting underway this month.
The URU has given the green light for professional players to feature. As such Peñarol players from the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) will be free to take the field for their respective clubs.
Uruguayan clubs were given governmental permission to begin on Saturday, July 25. This saw some warm-up matches taking place ahead of the official start of the Campeonato Uruguayo on Saturday, August 15.
The 2020 Campeonato Uruguayo Final will take place on December 05. The Estadio Charrúa will host the final. It will be contested between the two two sides of the eleven competing clubs in Uruguay’s national championship.
Of the eleven teams the top eight with advance to the play-off’s. From there the competition will feature Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and the Final. The Semi Finals will be played at the Estdio Charrúa on November 21.
Round one of the Campeonato Uruguayo will see five league matches: Old Christians vs Cebos, Los Cuervos vs PSG, Champagnat vs Trebol, Lobos vs MVCC, and Carrasco Polo vs Seminario. Old Boys will have a bye.
The URU has mapped out a calendar of continues rugby from August through until December. Of note is that Saturday, September 26 has been separated for international duty. This looms as the probable date for Uruguay’s home match against Argentina. Details of that fixture and the South American Championship are presently being discussed.
