Robbie Petzer signs for Tokyo Gas

Colorado Raptors star Robbie Petzer will not be returning to Major League Rugby in 2021. While many of his teammates have opted to stay in the league following Colorado’s withdrawal, Petzer will move to Japan to take up a contract with Tokyo Gas.

Petzer, 24, arrived from South Africa ahead of the 2019 season and made a big impression for the Raptors. Initially signed as a flyhalf, he featured primarily at inside center in his two seasons with the club. In May of last year he set an MLR single-game scoring record with 34 points against the Utah Warriors.

Tokyo Gas play in the Top East League, one of three second-tier professional divisions that compete for spots in the elite-level Top League. Australia international Sam Norton-Knight played for the team in 2019, while current Old Glory flyhalf Jason Robertson spent the 2017-18 season with the club.
