In a memorable RWC performance Canada were 34-3 winners over Romania in Port Elizabeth in 1995. Al Charron’s try was the first of three for the North Americans. The two others went to prop Rod Snow, and N8 Colin McKenzie.
Charron’s try was a combination of quick hands, speed and finishing. It started with fullback Scott Stewart gathering a kick inside his own half and counter-attacking. Passes would go to left winger Dave Lougheed, outside center Christian Stewart, right winger Winston Stanley, and finally Charron.
In what had such elegance that it resembled a training move Charron finished off the play by running 15 meters to score. The beautiful try was a reminder of the level of Canada during the 1990’s, a decade of massive conquests with the high point being making the Quarter Finals of RWC 1991.
At RWC 1995 Canada competed in a tough group. It contained Romania, Australia, and South Africa. Had they been drawn in a more friendly group it is fair to suggest they may have matched their achievements from RWC 1991. Instead they played against the champions from both RWC 1991, and RWC 1995 after their match against Romania.
