RUNY signs Fiji 7s hardman Apenisa Cakaubalavu

Rugby United New York have continued their trend of naming one signing per week day. Their latest announcement is the signing of Fijian international Apenisa Cakaubalavu, who makes the move to Major League Rugby directly from the from the World Sevens Series.

The 27-year-old from the village of Naroi on Moala Island made his circuit debut at the 2017 Dubai Sevens. He played in seven tournaments for Fiji during their title-winning 2018-19 campaign, and appeared on four stops of the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season.

Cakaubalavu has been signed primarily as a winger but has also played on the flank in the XV-a-side game. Standing 6’2″ (1.89m), he is known for his hard-hitting defense while also possessing speed, strength, and high quality offloading skills.

RUNY have now confirmed two new additions with local scrumhalf Connor Buckley the first signing of the off-season. Contract extensions for World Cup forwards Dylan Fawsitt and Nate Brakeley were announced late last week.
