Dates confirmed for Rugby Sevens at Tokyo Olympics

The new dates for the Rugby Sevens event at the postponed Tokyo Olympics have been confirmed. As expected the games will take place between July 25-31, 2021, a near identical placement to where the rugby would have been played had the tournament taken place as planned in 2020.

Ajinomoto Stadium will host the games. The venue was also used during Rugby World Cup 2019 for eight games including the tournament opener and the Bronze Final. It has a capacity of nearly 50,000 though it remains to be seen how many – or even if – fans will be permitted at the games.

The men will play across the first three days with their finals set for Wednesday, July 28, followed by the women’s finals on Saturday, July 31. Time slots for all six days are 09:00-12:00 and 16:30-19:00 local.

There are three teams still to qualify for the competition, two in the women’s draw and one in the men. Those will be decided in Repechage events yet to be confirmed.

Six teams from the Americas have already qualified. Argentina, Canada, and the USA are in the men’s bracket with Brazil, Canada, and the USA booking their place in the women’s bracket.

Americas teams who still have a chance to qualify include Brazil, Chile, Jamaica, and Mexico for the men. Competing in the women’s Repechage will be Argentina, Colombia, Jamaica, and Mexico.
