Training squads named for Cóndores 7s and XVs

In preparation for as of yet uncertain competition, Chile Rugby have named Cóndores training squads to train at the National High Performance Academy. Plans are currently to hold a South American Championship in Uruguay in September as the pandemic allows.

While the two groups will not yet be able to train together as a group, their squads are now defined with a focus on XVs or 7s. Until cleared by the government health authority, individual and small group training will continue online.

There are notable returns for prop Lucas Bordigoni, flanker Anton Petrowitch, and winger Franco Velarde. The professional trio have not featured for Los Cóndores XVs since 2018. Second row Augusto Sarmiento is another European returnee, and scrumhalf Marcelo Torrealba arrives from Major League Rugby.

Uncapped players include prop Esteban Inostroza, hooker Diego Escobar, second row Santiago Pedraro, center Matías Garafulic, and fullback Vicente Tredinick. All are recent u20 graduates and featured on the Selknam roster for the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby.

Other additions to the squad who were not part of the Selknam group include props Marcelo Huerta and José Tomás Munita, hooker Raimundo Martínez, lock Pablo Huete, scrumhalf Jan Hasenlechner, center or wing José Ignacio Larenas, and fullback Rodrigo Fernández.

The Condores 7s squad is a younger group with experience provided by long-time captain Felipe Brangier and veterans Francisco Metuaze, Benjamín de Vidts, and Lucas Westcott. Three players from northern Chile are included in Arica’s Bastián Díaz, Nicolás Navarrete from Antofagasta, and Alessandro Metifogo from La Serena.
