SaberCats announce new Development Squad

The Houston SaberCats have confirmed the creation of a new development unit dubbed Rugby HTX. Its intent is to expose young players of potential to a high performance training environment in preparation for a potential spot in Major League Rugby.

Current SaberCats coach and former Eagles international Paul Emerick is to head up the program that will include up to 30 players. The group will have three training sessions a week at Houston’s AVEVA Stadium home and will incorporate strength & conditioning and video analysis.

An open combine to identify talent has been scheduled for Saturday, August 8. Players must be 18 years of age and there is a $40 participation fee. Registration is now open on the SaberCats website.

In possibly related news, the West Houston Lions have confirmed the hiring of former Springboks forward Pedrie Wannenburg as their Head Coach. The 39-year-old played for Austin Elite in 2018 and continued as an Assistant Coach with the team through 2019.

Wannenburg would be an ideal addition to the HTX academy staff in combination with his Lions duties. West Houston have enjoyed a partnership with the SaberCats in recent years with several MLR players turning out for the Red River D1 side.
