Uruguay’s test players are back in action at the Estadio Charrúa, writes Agustín Basso. With COVID-19 under comparative control in the country, the home based Teros are now able to return to training at the national High Performance Center in Montevideo.
The resumption of training is a vital step towards getting the athletes back onto the field for competitive purposes. In order for Uruguay to play in international competition in 2020 other test sides are required to meet similar standards.
The Americas Rugby Championship will not take place, though efforts are focusing on a South American competition at the Estadio Charrúa. As it stands at present Uruguay is well-placed to host rugby matches in 2020. Indeed, Montevideo is the only Latin American city that presently has flights to the European Union.
Uruguay’s RWC 2019 roster was a mixture of home-base talent and players based in North America and Europe. The difference for 2020 was the creation of the Súper Liga Americana e Rugby (SLAR). The majority of Uruguay’s first professional team, Peñarol were Uruguayan players.
The same names who featured for Peñarol are now able to train at the Estadio Charrúa. This is of no small significance. Uruguay’s 31-man roster that traveled to Japan for RWC 2019 contained 16 players based at home. As such, a healthy contingent of players can now prepare for the possibility of international duty in the coming months.
