Sione Lolohea chooses Life, Logan Weidner signs for Brive

Two of North America’s top forward talents are effectively heading in opposite directions. Hawaiian second row Sione Lolohea has opted out of his Brive contract to instead take up a rugby scholarship at Life University. Filling the spot at the French Top 14 club’s academy is Canadian back row Logan Weidner. Both young men are just 18 years old.

Lolohea announced in late May that he would be heading to France to join Brive’s academy. An imposing figure at 6’6″ (1.98m) and 270lbs (122kg), he has been targeted by college football scouts since he was in 8th grade. The Maui High School product has now changed course and will play for the highly regarded Running Eagles program under the guidance of former USA Selects rep Colton Cariaga.

A recent graduate of Carson Graham Secondary in North Vancouver, Weidner had committed to playing football at the University of Alberta in January but has now signed a 3-year academy contract with Brive. He stands 6’5″ (1.96m) and checks in at 250lbs (114kg) with the ability to play lock though he prefers No8. Weidner is unique in that he has represented both Canada and the USA at age-grade level, though his future looks to be with the Maple Leafs.
