Matt Heaton extends contract with Rugby ATL

Rugby ATL have confirmed a two-year contract extension for co-captain Matt Heaton. The Canadian flanker is now tied to the club through the end of the 2023 Major League Rugby season, having initially signed through 2021 ahead of the expansion side’s inaugural campaign.

Heaton, 27, started four of five games for ATL in the shortened 2020 season. He shared captaincy duties with South African center Ryan Nell. The Quebec native is one of two Canadian internationals currently at the club along with second row Conor Keys, who signed a two-year extension in May.

The announcement follows this week’s re-signing of scrumhalf Duncan van Schalkwyk. Flyhalf Kurt Coleman is set to follow having been appointed Assistant Coach of 404 Rugby’s u19 development side. Michael Matarazzo and John Scotti were selected in the Collegiate Draft, with Argentine international Bautista Ezcurra the first new signing unveiled earlier this month.
