Arrows captain Dan Moor announces retirement

Toronto Arrows captain Dan Moor has announced his retirement from professional rugby with immediate effect. The decision comes one month shy of his 30th birthday and brings a close to a career that saw the Toronto native win 14 caps for Canada between 2016 and 2017.

Moor has been an ever-present in the Arrows side since signing from RFU Championship club Yorkshire Carnegie. While in England he also studied at Oxford University and earned a ‘blue’ against Cambridge in the 2017 Varsity Match.

In his two Major League Rugby campaigns with the Arrows, Moor started played in all but one match and retires as the team’s top try scorer with 11 in 21 games. He is also the overall leader in minutes played, with only Steven Ng and Peter Milazzo making more appearances.

Prior to turning professional Moor played his club rugby for the Balmy Beach Club and was a standout for Queen’s University Gaels where he was also a captain. Primarily a winger, he also spent time in the midfield and wore the No13 shirt on five occasions for Toronto.

It’s the second significant departure confirmed by the club in recent days. Leading points scorer Sam Malcolm will move to Japan to play for the Kamaishi Seawaves next season.

Arrows GM Mark Winokur thanked his departing captain in a statement:

“Dan has been a total professional as a member of our club, even dating back several years to our amateur days as the Ontario Blues in the Canadian Rugby Championship. Dan’s work ethic, dedication to his craft, and leadership abilities have meant quite a lot to this team in our first two years in Major League Rugby, and we will miss his on-field play just as much. We are delighted he has agreed to join our club’s advisory team, and his continued involvement will only stand to benefit our club for several years to come.

“We wish Dan the best of luck in his future endeavors off the pitch, and we thank him for leaving our club with a strong culture of professionalism and brotherhood. As a result of the hard work that Dan has put in, we can be assured that his teammates will step up to fill his shoes and meet the high standards that he has set, both as a player and a leader.”

Moor’s has been involved in the commercial side for the Arrows since early 2019. In November he will take up a full-time position with multi-national management consulting firm Bain & Company.
