World Rugby formally cancels u20 Trophy

World Rugby have officially cancelled the u20 Trophy tournament scheduled to take place in September. Set to be hosted in Villajoyosa, Spain, the decision comes as no surprise with the COVID-19 pandemic also causing the cancellation of the u20 Championship earlier this year.

Americas teams affected are Uruguay, Canada, and the USA. Los Teritos had already qualified as South American representatives in December by winning the regional u19 tournament ahead of Chile. The North American spot was to be decided in the postponed u20 Americas Rugby Championship.

A brief statement was released by World Rugby:

“In consideration of the dynamic and ongoing situation regarding the pandemic and the continued uncertainty surrounding international travel, the Trophy will no longer take place following detailed consultation with the host and participating nations.

“The difficult but appropriate decision has been taken in line with the relevant government and public health authority advice and with the welfare of players, staff and wider society as the top priority.

“World Rugby would like to thank the Federación Española de Rugby and all stakeholders involved for their efforts and understanding.”
