Canadian prop Jon Thiel scored a memorable try against Uruguay in 2002. The score came off an assist from scrum half Ed Fairhurst who had received a backhand pass from second-rower Mike James. It was a highlight of a match which Canada won 51-16 in a RWC 2003 qualifier wherein Canada secured the Americas 1 spot, Uruguay Americas 2 and the USA entered repechage.
Round 4 of the RWC 2003 qualifiers were a Four Nations tournament involving two sides from South America and two more from North America. Canada, Chile, Uruguay and the USA all played each other in home-and-away matches.
The model was not replicated for RWC 2007 and nor has it been used since. The recently announced qualifying process for RWC 2023 is now subject to change; it may see the Americas competing together in the ARC or separate qualifiers.
